PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This is an antique cameo and 14K yellow gold brooch measuring 1 1/4 inches (32.8 MM) long by 1 inch (26.4 MM) wide with a hinged bail enabling it to also be worn as a pendant. As early as 1805, craftsmen began using shell for cameos because it was easily carved due to its many layers, as compared to onyx or agate. Designs throughout history include many subjects. But, the most common of all is that of a noble Romanesque maiden with classic features, Roman dress, jewelry and intricately, often floral embellished hair. This left facing hand carved shell cameo depicts a young woman with highly embellished hair and crisp and distinct facial features. There are no chips or cracks, only hairline inclusions when held up to the light. The cameo is expertly bezel set in an oval frame with two different rope edge borders which has a secure pin back with a lock. Although not marked, it is thoroughly tested and 100% guaranteed 14K. The brooch has been professionally cleaned and brightly polished and weighs 5.3 grams. 26692
