This is a breathtaking carved shell cameo, gem and 14K white gold brooch measuring 1 7/8 inches (48.4 MM) long by 1 1/2 inches (39.5 MM) wide with a hinged bail, enabling it to also be worn as a pendant. As early as 1805, craftsmen began using shell for cameos because it was easily carved due to its many layers, as compared to onyx or agate. Designs throughout history include many subjects. But, the most common of all is that of a noble Romanesque maiden with classic features, Roman dress, jewelry and intricately, often floral embellished hair. Magnificent in design and detail, this cameo is unique in that it incorporates more of the subjects torso than is normally depicted. The beauty in this piece includes more than just a profile. Much attention is paid to her hair and its adornments, the folds of her dress and the dimensionality of her fingers which hold a flower. She wears a 14K white gold necklace set with a natural, genuine, untreated, round, faceted, single cut .03CT diamond of K color and I1 clarity and a fancy square .03CT emerald. That makes the total in all gems .06CT, and they and the cameo have no chips or cracks. The cameo is securely bezel set in an ornate, filigree frame, also secured from the back,  that has a secure pin back and comes with a base metal stick pin clutch. The brooch is marked, tested and guaranteed 14K and has been professionally cleaned and brightly polished. It weighs a substantial 14.5 grams and might also make a great gift for that someone special with a May birthday as that month’s birthstone is the emerald. 26327
