This is a heavy brass or polished bronze mortar and pestle with seahorse form handles.  There are impressed letters around the base and top rim.  The date appears to be 1595, but this appears to be a 19th century replica, and not an original 16th century piece. It has been in my family at least 50 years. Mortar measures 4.25″ round x 4.25″ tall. Pestle 7.75″ long.
