This antique cast iron mortar and pestle set was made before 1880. There is a gate mark on the bottom of the mortar showing its age. A gate mark is a line on antique cast iron pieces where they were broken away from the mold. After 1880 molds were changed so they no longer left these marks. This mortar is marked with the number 6 in a cartouche on both sides. It measures 5 inches tall. The base is 3 1/2 inches across and the top is 5 3/4 inches across. The 2 pieces together way over 5 pounds. The pestle is 9 1/4 inches long. One end is 1 3/4 inches. The other end measures between 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 inches. There is a number 5 on the pestle. There is a spot in the pestle from the manufacturing were it is out of round giving it a slightly dented appearance. There are also some pock marks that may have happened when it was molded. This is a really neat 19th century mortar and pestle set with a great look.
